The executive director of nursing & midwifery at North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust is asking for members of the public to get involved with developing the Trust’s new nursing, midwifery and allied health professionals strategy.
Gail Naylor, who joined the Trust in May 2014, is leading the creation of the new strategy which will reflect the needs of the nursing, midwifery and allied health professionals staff and service users as well as setting out clear priorities and goals moving forward. Following on from the recently published Care Quality Commission (CQC) report which praised the hardworking, caring and compassionate staff working in the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle and West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven, the strategy will celebrate and build on this success.
Staff in the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle, West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven and the Penrith Birthing Centre have been taking part in engagement sessions, ensuring that their ideas and views are incorporated into the strategy which will launch in December 2014.
There are many reasons for creating the strategy including the changing expectations of patients and their families, the implementation of the chief nursing officer for England’s nursing and caregiver strategy and the need to ensure patients receive the right care at the right time with the appropriately skilled staff.
Gail Naylor, executive director of nursing & midwifery, said: “The publication of our strategy will outline our ambition for the future of nursing and midwifery in North Cumbria, putting care and compassion at the heart of everything we do.
“The NHS is currently facing some of its greatest challenges to date and it is my absolute belief that with clear sense of direction and priorities, underpinned by truly living our Trust’s values, these challenges can be met. As nurses and midwives, we have a privileged and unique opportunity to directly shape the experiences of our patients, service users and their families/carers.
“I want everyone who delivers care in our hospitals to be proud of their profession and proud to work for our Trust. I also want our patients and those close to them to receive the best possible care and experience from a caring, compassionate and competent workforce.
“I have been delighted by the level of engagement and motivation amongst the staff we are meeting with as we are working on developing the strategy. The ideas generated and the positive way in which this work has been received has been inspirational and I am full of hope and expectation as to what we will achieve together.
“It is also very important to me to hear what people living in north Cumbria want to see in our nursing strategy. What are the most important things to them when it comes to receiving nursing or midwifery care in our hospitals? What do they feel we do well and what do they think we need to improve? I look forward to reading everybody’s views in due course.”
