On Tuesday 10th September 2013 at CREA, Penrith, Healthwatch Cumbria hosted their first annual conference which proved to be a huge success. The half-day event was attended by over 70 of the most influential delegates from health and social care organisations across Cumbria, and featured a key note speech from Dr Kathrine Rake OBE, Chief Executive of Healthwatch England.
The conference was hosted by the new Chairperson of Healthwatch Cumbria – Dr Mark Hoelterhoff, a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Cumbria – who gave a presentation about Healthwatch Cumbria’s achievements since inception in April 2013 and set out the vision for Healthwatch moving forward. A mid-morning interactive session provided delegates with the opportunity to consider how they wished to work collaboratively with Healthwatch Cumbria to ensure it can have a positive effect on local Health and Social Care Services. They also discussed ways to increase public influence on service quality and planning, helping to shape Healthwatch Cumbria’s approach in the future.
David Blacklock, Chief Executive of Healthwatch Cumbria, said:
“We were delighted to host delegates from many of the key Health and Social Care service providers, including Cumbria County Council, Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust and University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group as well as representatives from other providers in the third sector. We believe the event has helped to bring Healthwatch Cumbria to the attention of those who provide Health and Social Care Services across the County.”
“We were encouraged by the enthusiasm shared by all attendees to work together to listen to patients and service users to improve quality and patient experiences. Ultimately we want to ensure that Cumbrian services are the very best that they can be for the people of Cumbria.”
The event also featured presentations from Ann Farrar, CEO of North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust, John Cowdall, Chairperson of University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, Beverly Cole, Compliance Manager, Care Quality Commission, Dr Geoff Jolliffe GP Lead Commissioner, NHS Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group, Richard Parry, Corporate Director of Adult and Local Services and Mike Taylor, Chairperson, Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
